Abstract

The article focuses on the opposition of the British government that led to the failure of the U.S. bid for the Allies to launch an invasion across the English Channel in 1943. The U.S. plans of bringing about the defeat of Germany in northwestern Europe proposed by General George C. Marshall to the British government in April 1942 are cited. An overview of the British strategy to defeat the Germans is provided. An analysis of whether a 1943 attack would have been successful is offered.
