Abstract

Femoral shaft fractures mostly result from high-energy trauma and young adult males are typically affected. The standard treatment is antegrade reamed interlocking medullary nailing. Retrograde nailing and plate fixation are other treatment options. In polytraumatized patients, primary management according to the guidelines of damage control surgery includes initial fracture fixation with an external fixator before scheduled early secondary definitive fixation is performed. Particularly in complex fractures, restoration of the length and rotation can represent some challenges for the surgeon. This article provides tips and tricks for the effective management of femoral shaft fractures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
