Abstract

The article focuses on carbon dating of a Denisovan jawbone fossil which was dated to around 160,000 years of age. It states mass spectrometry of fossil proteins from the tooth's dentin helped classify it as Denisovan while age of the carbonate crust on the fossil's surface was determined using uranium-thorium dating. It comments the fossil came from Baishiya Karst Cave, a sacred site in Xiahe, Gansu, China and mentions the need to excavate a stratigraphic series where the fossil was found.
