Abstract
- The article focuses on late 18th- and 19th-century seal hunters survived on the harsh island landscape of South Georgia. It mentions Thomas Smith hung back warily during the first attack on a herd of elephant seals, enormous beasts that weigh up to five tons and sealers began to target the marine mammals in 1786. It also mentions archaeologists endured far less arduous conditions than the sealers and sealing and whaling on the island.
