Abstract

This article aims to analyze the perceptions of penitentiary agents of the Penal Institute of Campo Grande (IPCG) on the relation between the ideas of femininity and the work resulting from their professions, present in their imaginaries and narratives. We seek a proximity between these concepts, thinking of the construction of femininity by the space of a "total institution" and an environment marked by the masculinity of inmates. The proposal is to understand the female gender as a process in the construction of an identity both of itself and perceived by others. Social identity is understood as something formed from a particular profession and the conditions demarcated by it. We emphasize the IPCG as focus for the exclusionary character of diverse social relations of the subjects and for the role of recognized masculinized environment. We turn to the concepts of Judith Butler's performative femininity, Erving Goffman's total institution, and Pedro Bodê's professional identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
