Abstract

Although recognizing that a continual critique of (constantly evolving) capitalism continues to be an essential aspect of Marxism, Paresh Chattopadhyay makes clear that the focus of this book is on Marx and Engels's ideas about the nature of what will replace it. Chapter 4, "Post-capitalist Society: A Marxist Portrait", examines how Marx and Engels presented their continually maturing ideas on this in the I Communist Manifesto i , in particular introducing there the idea that capitalism creates both the material and subjective conditions for its own transcendence through a "union of free individuals". But he and Marx were always clear this meant, as Chattopadhyay quotes Marx saying, "the political state disappears" (5). [Extracted from the article]
