Abstract
- From pre-Hispanic times to the present, the green iguana (Iguana iguana) has been one of the most intensively utilized species in the diet of the populations of the Caribbean Region of Colombia. According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, this species is not threatened. Nevertheless, it has been recommended that in order to prevent its use from undermining its survival, it is necessary to control trade in the animals. In this article, we discuss the results of an investigation that sought to explain the reasons why the conservation strategies that have been implemented to protect the species have not yielded the expected results to date. The study in turn contributes from the anthropological perspective, with analysis of the convenience of implementing proposals and action plans that have been taking place worldwide and that link the themes of food heritage, the conservation of species and sometimes also so-called gastronomic tourism. The approach to the subject was made from a broad temporal perspective. Three methodological components were used, one of which is zooarchaeological, focused on occurrences of the green iguana in archaeological contexts. Additionally, descriptions of the use of this species found in primary and secondary sources from the sixteenth century were reviewed. Further, analysis of the results of current programs and initiatives for the study and conservation of the green iguana is included. The results of this work allow us to document the consumption of the green iguana in the Caribbean Region for at least three thousand years, a practice that continued during the colonial period and is found even today. The information derived from examination of the work of conservation biologists shows that, beyond the cultural importance that this species still has for some populations of the region, there are problems related to its commercialization and illegal trafficking and to legislation that is non-functional. These factors operate in conjunction with the extreme poverty of some communities. In this article, it is suggested that a transdisciplinary perspective and analysis on a broad time scale are of great importance in the design of programs for the protection of the heritages pertaining to both the natural environment and to food. This perspective is essential to evaluations of plans to preserve these heritages, with consideration of the ecological, economic, social and cultural variability found in each historical context within the same region.
