- The article reports on the advance of Russian and Syrian forces in long-contested areas in Syria following the withdrawal of American forces in October 2019. Topics include the possible effects of the withdrawal on the leadership of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the entry of Turkish forces in Syria, as well as the efforts of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin to gain influence in the Middle East.
