Abstract

According to world experts 60-100% of chronic wounds are infected. The mere presence of microorganisms does not disturb wound healing. The most common pathogens colonizing the wounds are: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus genus. The biofilm produced in the wound disturbs the healing process, increases pH, causes tissue hypoxia, protein damage and tissue breakdown by increasing proteases and free radicals. Selection of proper treatment ensures effective eradication of the biofilm. If the biofilm is removed incorrectly from a chronic wound, it replenishes its structure within 24 hours and is fully renewed within 3 days after debridement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
