Abstract
- This paper results from a Master's research that approached the use of cartoons in the final grades of elementary school. We elaborated and tested activities based on socioscientific issues (SSI) presented through cartoons with the aim of putting together better science education and the development of the students reading competence. The participants were 49 students from three ninth grade classes of a municipal school in Poá/SP. In this paper we discuss the results of a cartoon based activity and those obtained from a questionnaire with the participants' impressions about this approach model. Our analysis suggests that most students do not understand pragmatic factors of textuality that we consider essential to the full exercise of reading competence. Students seem to perceive intertextuality and intentionality more easily. On the other hand, less than one-third of them evinced readiness to perceive the situationality and acceptability of a given text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
