The rapid evolution of electronic information and control systems is pressuring many designers to build high-performance user interfaces. Many of these advances are being requested by the engineers who are using them. New requirements such as size, ruggedness, low maintenance and higher resolution put severe constraints on many popular display designs. To further compete with new displays coming down the pike, many CRT makers are looking for smaller, more dependable power sources. Companies are also developing additional products for engineers working in the CRT world. Though most experts predict it may be quite a while before the CRT is displaced by flat panel displays, much research is underway.
