Abstract

This research provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic identities. It is maintained that violence previously coined as interreligious strife is truly inter-class conflict. Beginning with a description of India’s changing economic landscape, the idea that Hindu-Muslim conflict results from economic tension is discussed. This paper highlights three types of economic inequalities that lead to communalism, including market share inequality, land inequality, and urban/rural inequalities. In addition, the paper touches on the issues of neoliberalism and environmental degradation, using India as a case study to show how these multifaceted issues contribute to violence and exclusion on a broader scale.
