Abstract

A preliminary experiment, aimed at discovering whether children were able to attend to one of two simultaneously presented messages by producing a shadowing response, showed two things. First, they appeared capable of perceiving the required message since they were able to summarize the meaning afterwards, and second a large proportion, particularly of the younger children, were unable to produce a clear shadowing response. On 13 trials subjects produced higher scores for one or more presentation rates for the ear they were required to reject than for the ear they were required to accept.
