Abstract

There is a growing interest in bidirectional DC-DC converters used in plug-in electric vehicle chargers that supports grid to vehicle (G2V) and vehicle to grid (V2G) operations. This paper presents the design and simulation of a two-quadrant current reversible non-isolated DC-DC converter for Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) charger. The topology consists of two IGBT switches. The converter operates in two quadrants in voltage-current (V-I) plane with four different intervals of operation. The current reversible DC-DC converter is fed with a bidirectional AC-DC converter. An enhanced Lithium-ion battery model is proposed to study the performance of current reversible DC-DC converter. This paper also presents a system controller that regulates instantaneous battery current which ensures constant current charging. The battery reference current is generated using variable dc-link voltage control. Simulating the constant current charging controller with proposed converter in MATLAB-Simulink yields promising results of forward G2V and reverse V2G functionality of two quadrant current reversible non-isolated DC-DC converter for Plug-in Electric Vehicle charger applications. A stable dynamic response of the proposed controller is also observed from the simulation results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
