This article aims to offer a biographical reading of St. John of the Cross from the experience of his imprisonment in Toledo, based on the songs contained in The Spiritual Canticle. By means of a linear reading of the songs, we will reconstruct on the one hand, the process of internal and external liberation which the imprisoned saint longed for and, on the other, the impact which this experience had on him and on his mission during the period following his imprisonment.
