Abstract

The article presents information about the election of Edmund S. Muskie as the governor by the people of Maine. The extent to which the pine-paper, water power and shoe-textile manufacturing interests control Maine is extreme and persuaded the legislature to repeal the Fernald Law which for 45 years prohibited the transportation out of Maine of electrical power. Republican control of the legislature blocked some of liberal proposals, but he did obtain a 75 cent minimum wage law, utility rate regulation changes and the substitution of an income tax for the regressive sales tax.
