Abstract

The article reflects on free speech as embodied in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It cites a poll conducted by the Campaign for Free Speech wherein participants aged 18 to 34 agreed that the First Amendment should be changed according to the present cultural norms, with some favoring criminalization of hate speech while some agree that punishment should be imprisonment. He notes former slave Frederick Douglass' view regarding free speech.
