Abstract

In a Vision session at the NASIG 35th annual meeting, Dr. Philip Schreur presented the advantages for libraries to move away from MARC and towards linked data at this time. He concentrated on four themes: the advantages of new communication technologies and the open Web; new approaches to authority work and workflows; increased social justice through broader access and multiple vocabularies in a wider range of results; and possible gains through human-centered artificial intelligence. As initiatives expand from the Library of Congress and new conversion products appear on our horizon, embracing the transition from MARC to linked data may be easier, and more necessary, than it currently appears for many libraries.
