Abstract

This essay seeks to reflect on the reasons that led sport not to consolidate itself as a social right for every Brazilian citizen. To achieve this goal, a socio-historical analysis was carried out, showing how the sport was inserted in the state sphere of the country from the 1940s until the victory of the extreme right in the presidential election of 2018. Even with sports becoming a social right provided for in the 1988 constitution, successive governments did not make them a cultural element accessible to the Brazilian population. In conclusion, it is pointed out that the organization of the Olympic Games was a missed opportunity for Brazil to realize the ideals foreseen in the 1988 constitution, since the country only opted to host the competitions and did not really seek to become a sports nation. where its practice was accessible to most of its population.
