Abstract

Two recent jazz films, I Born to Be Blue i and I Miles Ahead i (focused on Chet Baker and Miles Davis, respectively), represent important departures from the standard formulas of jazz biopics. I Miles Ahead i similarly creates space between the protagonist Miles and Miles Davis the jazz icon by dramatizing Davis's efforts not to be rendered irrelevant by his own legend. Meanwhile, in the aforementioned argument, Frances reminds Miles of everything she does to support him, saying "you have never played better a day in your life and you know it."[10] Because Jane and Frances appear in such unambiguously positive lights, Chet and Miles's self-destructive actions come off as selfish rather than romantic.
