Abstract

The article presents information about abstracts of various papers that will be discussed at the Janssen-Cilag Satellite Symposium that will be held on May 30, 2004. One of the papers that will be discussed is "Antiepileptic Drugs As Pro-Apoptotic Agents in the Developing Brain: Mechanism for Adverse Neurobehavioral Outcomes?" by H. Ikonomidou. Adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on the developing human brain have been recognized since the early 1970's. AEDs taken by pregnant women to prevent seizures are among the most common causes of fetal malformations, microcephaly and developmental delay. Other papers that will be discussed are "Epilepsy and Antiepileptic Drugs: Vulnerability of the Elderly," by R. Eugene Ramsay and "Topiramate As Monotherapy: Findings From Large-Scale Clinical Trials," by R. Guerrini.
