Relying of historians and film scholars such as R. A. Rosenstone, William Guynn and Marnie Hughes-Warrington who tried to justify historical film (as genre) and the film that deals with history (irrespective of type and genre) as relevant sources for studying history, this paper questions the possibility of interpreting historical films as texts whose interpretation is subject to linguistic games discussed by Barthes, Blanchot and Derrida in their late key texts. This is an attempt to demystify the genre of historical film as an unambiguous authentic presentation of something from the "extracinematic" empirical "reality", and a return to the interpretation of the code which at the same time checks and "unchecks" the genre and finally a conciliation of historiography and film studies with a conclusion that every historical text can be educational precisely because it is susceptible to interpretation.
