Abstract

The article features laptop computers, cellular phones, wristops and other technologies introduced in the U.S. market as of September 2004. The Sprint/Sanyo 5100 cellular phone works tolerably as a speakerphone, but it's not nearly as good. Typically cruising the ether at 115 kbps, the AirCard 550 high speed wireless card from Sprint works well with either laptop or Windows CE Pocket PC devices and the PCS Connection manager is easy to use once it's set up. The Downside is that Sprint doesn't have an unlimited service plan, requiring users to figure out how much data they'll be up and downloading, and signing up for a year at rates up to $100 a month for 300 MB of transfer. The Vaio TR3A Picturebook laptop from Sony includes a VGA camera, but it also has a high resolution display and a built-in optical drive. The 3.1 pound weight no longer seems ultralight, but considering it has an optical drive built in and the Centrino chipset makes an extended life battery. The C Series Lifebook 2300 laptop from Fujitsu costs about $1500. Nearly 13 inches wide, 11.25 inches deep and weighing in at just under eight pounds. Battery life is less than spectacular, with an estimate of a bit over two hours, though the high capacity battery will double that.
