Abstract

Present work employs reinforcing of ZrO2 and TiO2 particles (each 8.3 wt %) in aluminum alloy 6061 as a matrix and sample was prepared. Keeping in view the requirement, the set up for stir casting is being developed. Fabrication and characterization and machining of AA 6061/ ZrO2 and TiO2 AMMC (Aluminum Metal Matrix Composites) by stir casting route is the objective of this research. Powerful microscope is being employed to study the microstructure and thus the micrographs were prepared of the sample. ZrO2 and TiO2 particles were consistently dispersed in the base alloy and it was concluded that these have well-bred the grains of the aluminum matrix. Clusters of ZrO2 and TiO2 particles was identified in few sites. ZrO2 and TiO2 particles were adequately infused in the aluminum matrix. Hardness at micro level and wear defiance of the samples has been enhanced by the reinforcements of ZrO2 and TiO2 particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
