Preface: Proceedings of the 23rd International Workshop on Inelastic Ion-Surface Collisions (IISC-23).

This virtual special issue of Nuclear Instruments and Methods B contains the proceedings of the 23rd International Workshop on Inelastic Ion-Surface Collisions (IISC-23) that was held from 17 to 22 November 2019 in Matsue, Japan. The IISC workshop is a series of biennial meetings gathering scientists working in the field of the fundamental aspects of the inelastic interactions of particles with surfaces, which started in 1976 at Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ, USA. The next workshop in this series (IISC-24) is scheduled for 2021 and will be chaired by Prof. Chad Sosolik in Clemson University, USA. [Extracted from the article]
