Abstract

Natural protected areas (NPAs) manage natural resources in order to preserve them through conservation strategies according to the characteristics of the area. In this study the Sierra Monte Negro State Reserve located in the state of Morelos, Mexico, was evaluated in its design, management and monitoring, using qualitative variables from the open standards for the practice of conservation and structured according to the evaluation of the design of CONEVAL. It was found that the conceptualization, management and monitoring reached a moderately satisfactory degree, presenting important gaps such as the declaration of a general vision, the clear identification and prioritization of conservation objects and direct threats, the ambiguity of goals, strategies and objectives, and the lack of indicators for monitoring. The results will improve the management planning process at NPAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
