Abstract

Pythonids are fascinating extant reptiles comprising exclusively non-venomous Old-World taxa and including some of the largest known snakes (Murphy and Henderson, [39]). The fossil record of I Python i (sensu lato) is not adequately known; however, it still denotes a more extensive geographic distribution with the genus reaching Europe (Römer, [57]; Rage, [46], [48], [49]; Ivanov, [31]; Szyndlar and Rage, [65]; Head, [28]). The Pasalar I Python i represents the first fossil record of the genus from Anatolia. Interestingly, also, the type locality of the Euboean snake species, Kymi, is the most geographically proximate to Pasalar among other fossil occurrences of I Python i , whereas the localities that have yielded specimens of I Python maurus i and I Python europaeus i are rather distant.
