Metalinguistic, the work of Sérgio Sant'Anna is characterized by a fictionalization of the writing itself, offering protagonism to the literary language. In "Um discurso sobre o método", a 1989 short story, published in A senhorita Simpson, that protagonism brings a fundamental question for Brazilian literature: the representation of the poor, and the ways of aesthetically adressing social distances. This paper seeks to analyze how such process occurs, investigating both the narrative formulation and the disputes evidenced by it, reading Sant'Anna's writing as a stage for the clashes that conform fiction and the reproduction of the real, which are also present in the Brazilian literary field.
