Abstract

Ecological studies with an emphasis on bird diversity in urban areas are important since new records may mean an expansion of their geographic range, and amplify knowledge of the biological role of these communities. We aimed to evaluate the bird community in an urbanized environment in the municipality of Goiania, Goiás State. During the period of september 2005 to august 2006, data were collected monthly through a quantitative and qualitative survey, corresponding to 12 months of collection, 216 hours of sampling and considering the method of “fixed listening point count”. A total of 123 species from 40 families and 6,314 individuals were recorded, and the estimated richness according to Jack-knife1 = 134 showed that a significant portion of the avifauna was sampled. Resident species represented (48%) and Probable Resident species (42%) totaled 90%, and the 12 species (10%) were considered Occasional or Overflying. Four species were classified in the “high sensitivity” category: Aramides cajaneus, Orthopsittaca manilatus, Aratinga auricapillus and Eucometis penicillata. Insectivorous species predominated (n = 30%), omnivorous (n = 27%) and low sensitivity (75.6%), as expected in urban areas. Nevertheless, the study environment proved to be an important conservation area because it provides avifauna environments for resting, feeding and nesting even in an urbanized area.
