Abstract

Objective: To analyze the correlation between self-esteem and risk for drug use among adolescents in 8th and 9th years of elementary school in the municipal network of city in the interior of Minas Gerais. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive correlational study with a quantitative approach, with the participation of 347 students of both genders in the 8th and 9th years of the municipal education network in a city in the interior of Minas Gerais. For data collection, the Drug Use Screening Inventory) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were used. The dependent variables are all of the ordinal type, and correlation tests of the Nonparametric type are performed. Results: The majority of the participants were girls (62.82%), from the age group of 14 years (38.62%) and socioeconomic class B2 (39.49%). It was found that in absolute density all areas of the DUSI, except the substance use area, were directly influenced by the adolescents' negative self-esteem, with the greatest correlation with psychiatric disorders; in relative density, only the family system was related to negative self-esteem. Conclusion: the risk of problems related to substance use does not depend on a positive or negative self-esteem, but negative self-esteem can influence the development of psychiatric disorders and family relationships.
