Abstract

The article critiques the novel "Agosto" by Rubem Fonseca. Topics include a re-elaboration in the novel of the last days of Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas before his suicide in 1954, a discussion of personalism and personification in the work which can be read as both detective and historical fiction, and the metonymies used in the book to portray unsolved political tensions between individualism and the state as well as mythology and historiography.
