Abstract

GLO:nyo/06jul20:70n1.jpg PHOTO (COLOR): Andrea delCastagno, The Last Supper (1445-50). gl GLO:nyo/06jul20:70n2.jpg PHOTO (COLOR): Leonardoda Vinci, The Last Supper (1490s). gl In this time, overwhelmed and dizzied, I find myself going backto Renaissance masterworks for reasons I don't entirely understand. The first is thesecond-most-famous painting in Western art history: Leonardo daVinci's The Last Supper, begun in Milan around 1495. The other isan almost unknown 1445-50 masterpiece by Andrea del Castagno inFlorence, a painting Leonardo probably knew, studied, and tried tomove beyond. Leonardo's painting shattered older artistic forms andembedded new ideas in material; Castagno's version, tremendous inits own right, can still surprise and imparts incredible spiritual power.
