Abstract
- This review provides an overview of two recent books on the role of think tanks in times of crisis, namely the climate crisis and the 2008 financial crisis. ASI blamed the government and regulation for the financial crisis and advanced libertarian arguments for austerity, but it also enacted internal tensions as some of its members tried to moderate ASI's hardline laissez-faire and broaden its appeal in a time of economic hardship. The study builds on various conceptual tools to link "variation at the organizational level (typologies), distinct points of intervention in public discourses (role and types of ideas), and the particularities of different institutional environments (knowledge regimes)" (Ruser, 2018, p. 45). Following Campbell and Pedersen (2011, 2014), the American knowledge regime is characterized as a "market-oriented knowledge regime" structured by both a "decentralized, open state" and a "liberal market economy" that fosters competition between interests and a supply and demand dynamic in knowledge production.
