Abstract

Consequently, viewing Stele 5 as an art object mainly serves to verify the ever-popular "mysterious disappearance" of the Maya story and to emphasize the investment value of Maya art. Cara Tremain and Donna Yates have edited a diverse set of papers about the Mesoamerican art market that will interest a diverse audience. Donna Yates proposes that banning US importation of all undocumented Mesoamerican artifacts would be more effective than CIPA's bilateral agreements, paralleling US policy on endangered species - for example, no jaguar pelts may be imported regardless of country of origin.
