Abstract

This paper presents a conceptual model of the business system in terms of its two constituent parts: the exchange network and the communication network. This model is applied to the Scottish economy and an analysis of the Scottish business system is given. It is argued that whilst Scottish capital is predominantly owned by English interests, the network of interlocking directorships shows the relative autonomy of Scottish business within the British economy.
