Abstract

The brachial plexus is the nervous complex responsable for the motor, sensory, and autonomic function of the upper limb. It originates from the ventral branches of the spinal nerves from C5 to T1. Anatomical variations in the neurovascular structures of the extremities are relatively common and can be of clinical, surgical, and radiological significance. We report the case of a 36 year old woman in whom we found an anatomical variant in the formation of the upper trunk during the dissection of a left brachial plexus for its surgical reconstruction after suffering a closed traumatic injury, and we discuss the basic anatomical aspects, anatomical variants described in literature, and their importance in surgical decision-making.
