Abstract

The paper deals with the origin of the Johann-Alley (Johannes-Avenue, Johann-Allée), found in the landscape west of the city walls of the Olomouc city in the 1830s, and its development into a public park in 1880s. It focuses on the lesser-known period of the beginnings of tree lined walks, designed as formal landscape structures based on classicism. It analyses the expansion of the recreational space by adjoining small parts of meadows, landscaped with irregular net of tiny paths and various shrubs, till the establishment of the large urban park, laid out between the tree alleys and city walls. It examines the relation between its relatively simple landscape design and its social use. The paper brings new information about the vegetation noticed here in the middle of the 19th century, especially about trees and shrubs corresponding to common domestic species. The tree alleys and the park are examined and evaluated as an important part of the suburban landscape and later of the city, reflecting the main historical tendencies of European landscape architecture.
