Abstract

The article examines John Milton's depiction of Behemoth in "Paradise Lost." Topics discussed include Behemoth's function in the Book of Job, early modern interpretations of Behemoth, and theodicy in both the Book of Job and "Paradise Lost." It also explores the various ways that Milton diminishes the monster's symbolic function to evade the anti-theodicy that Behemoth represents.
