Abstract

Pulses of I o i (10 SP 11 sp ) neutrons may be feasible for single-shot thermometry on other loading platforms, with significant challenges in loading over an adequate area and in protecting the laser source and the detector. Compared with LANSCE experiments using spallation neutrons, laser-accelerated neutrons with a lower initial mean energy do mean that the moderator can be slightly smaller for the same luminosity per neutron. Several further orders of magnitude increase in neutron production are needed before short-pulse laser facilities could usefully perform single-shot NRS thermometry on laser-loaded samples.
