Despite low level of evidence, the given recommendations are graded strong and give clear and practical recommendations for this ERAS item in emergency laparotomy. Fifteen years ago, the first ERAS consensus statement was published and described perioperative care for colorectal surgery, thereby emphasizing multidisciplinary work, evidence-based interventions and quality control with interactive audit [[1]].
