Abstract
- Ethnic diversity poses some problems to contemporary states, problems which should be either acknowledged, contained, or ignored. More confusingly still, all three responses are entirely plausible and to a certain degree even called upon at once. This is because both diversity and states are inherently complex and multifaceted things that may enter into multiple and often incompatible engagements and combinations. A minimal ambiguity of diversity is to comprise both negatively valued inequalities that arise from immigrants' ethnicity, race, or national origins and a positively valued ethos that surrounds these markers. In this article, the author further explores the relationship between ethnic diversity and the state.
