Abstract

The article offers information of Austin Harbutt MacCormick who may be best known in Texas for conducting a comprehensive survey of the Texas Prison System in 1944. Topics discussed include the sweeping reforms that followed his survey revitalized Texas penitentiaries and the manner in which prisoners were supervised; and 1974 Carasco Siege of the Huntsville Unit and the Ruiz lawsuits in the 1980s often overshadow Austin MacCormick's story.
