Abstract

The author sees three distinct periods and three different directions in religious sociology in Poland. In the first period, the sociologists were concerned with religion as an element in popular culture. In the second period, followers of the school of Znaniecki concerned themselves with the influence of socio-religious groups on the formation of social conscience. After 1957, the influence of research on Catholicism in France made itself felt and, as a result, a study was made in Poland of religious attitudes and practice. The studies enabled some features to be established in the rate of religious feeling and even created some sort of basis for the formation of general hypotheses which, however, still need verification.
