Abstract

In terms of how democracy ends through executive aggrandisement, Runciman asserts that this is in populism, whose basic idea is that democracy has been stolen from the people by the elites. The central argument of David Runciman, in the book, is that representative democracy's end in the twentieth century is signalled by unfamiliar factors that result in the coming apart of the virtues - individual dignity and long-term benefits - of democracy.
