Abstract

I Palaces i proposes that what the author calls "social infrastructure", "the physical spaces and organizations that shape the way people interact" (2018:5), is indispensable to the effective functioning of society. If Klinenberg has his way, social infrastructure will become as central to long-term urban planning as the highways, bridges, and hospitals that constitute "hard" infrastructure. Palaces for the People How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life. While the case makes clear that creating infrastructure can be difficult, the reader wanted more: How should we think about the fact that not everyone wants community-building infrastructure such as swimming pools?.
