Abstract

The Mo based alloys with minor Ti additive were fabricated by successive processes of simple ball-milling and low-temperature sintering. Different from traditional titanium oxides additive, the minor Ti additive will adsorb nearby oxygen impurities to form TiO 2 or Ti 8 O 15 during above process, thus purifying Mo matrix. The size of formed titanium oxides (approximately 540 nm) is also close to that reported in relevant literatures. What's more, the Ti additive could availably refine the Mo powder particles during ball-milling process and improve its sintering activity. While maintaining high densit (> 99%), the sintered Mo based alloys with minor Ti additive possess finer grain (13.17 μm → 4.44 μm) and higher hardness (249 HV 0.2 → 332 HV 0.2) compared with pure Mo. • Minor Ti additive was innovatively introduced into Mo alloys. • The Ti could adsorb oxygen impurities to purify Mo matrix. • The Ti finally forms TiO 2 or Ti 8 O 15 phases. • The Ti could availably refine Mo grains. • The Ti could availably improve Mo alloy hardness.
