Abstract
- This review deals with and current perspectives and the evolution of aquaculture in Japan. Japan is a small country state with limited land for agricultural purposes and sea space available for aquaculture. Aquaculture production has developed rapidly in Japan and now it occupies an important position in fisheries sector. Japan depends heavily on importation of fresh seafood. Even so, Japan has a small but thriving and increasingly important food fish farming industry. The main bulk of local food fish production comes from coastal farming along the coast of Japan. Popular species of marine food fish cultured include nori, yesso scallop, oyster, japanese amberjack, red seabream and sea mustard. The easy adaptation to captivity conditions, high growth rate, acceptance of low value foods, high reproductive rate and high market price are the requirements to be considered for commercial culture. The aquaculture diversity found in Japan can be a great indication of the sustainable development condition in the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
