Abstract
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used for a long time as an ancillary diagnostic tool to treat temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). In the case of disc displacement, several researchers have used it in many clinical studies. It has also been adopted in clinical practice as a common diagnostic tool. However, the data in the literature is contrasting, specially concerning measuring protocols, interpretation of the results and clinic correlations. This review aims to put in context the use of sagittal MRI to asses disc position. To evaluate changes in condylar, fossa and articular eminence dimensions associated with TMJ disc position, both computer tomography (CT) and MRI should be used respectively, but also the reliability of the interpretation of MRIs and CT gives rise to concern. Moreover, the lack of correlation between imaging and symptoms make us see that more precise diagnostic tools are necessary. We do believe that all of the aforementioned needs to be taken in consideration when evaluating pre and post treatment disc position, specially those treatments that are targeted to reposition or change TMJ disc position.
