An exploration of stasis and change: a park in the Old Quarter Hanoi as a palimpsest.

This paper focuses on modes of stabilities and mobilities within a park in central Hanoi where the past and present intersect as tourists and locals visit and interact with each other as well as with the visual and aural resources. We document the transformable nature of what is represented in space and time by considering how the material artefacts, the written resources inscribed in space, the aural resources created by various actors and their mobility collectively mark the space. Over time, some resources remain, others leave momentary traces, while still others re-emerge in similar but not identical forms, creating multiple layerings of this urban palimpsest. This paper documents some of these layerings and considers how they inform our understandings of the ways stabilities interact to enable and disenable mobilities in semiotic systems.
