Abstract

This study relies on REDI (Regional Entrepreneurship and Development Index) to analyse the entrepreneurial performance of the 22 Hungarian city regions and to compare them with the other 118 NUTS 1 and NUTS 2 European Union regions. REDI is a novel and unique composite indicator encompassing 28 individual and institutional variables, 14 pillars, three sub-indices, and the REDI super index. REDI aims to measure the entrepreneurship ecosystem at the regional level and to provide tailor-made policy recommendations based on PFB (Penalty for Bottleneck Methodology). The Hungarian city regions can be found at the bottom of the ranking except for Budapest that has much higher performance than any other regions of the country. However, Budapest and other more developed Hungarian regions show a low level of entrepreneurial performance as compared with the development-implied trend line. The study also presents a simulation on how to use effectively additional resources in order to increase the REDI score by five in each 22 Hungarian city regions. While cultural support and high growth are bottlenecks for many city regions, the composition of the 14 pillars is unique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
